Lawrie McCredie Student Support Program

Between 1966 and 1999, Lawrie McCredie served the Faculty of Law at Monash University as a teacher, administrator, mentor, friend and colleague to hundreds of staff and thousands of students. Lawrie’s reputation as a teacher and scholar in the field of wills, probate and succession was exceeded only by his renown as the Faculty’s Sub Dean, a position he held for many years. In that role he was widely respected and admired and is remembered by all for his relationships with, and tireless support of, students of the Law School.

The longest standing staff members of the Law School, Professor Richard Fox and Professor H.P. Lee, regard Lawrie as one of the Faculty’s most respected and much- loved academics.  “Lawrie’s door was always open, and he had an amazing rapport with students and colleagues alike,” Professor Fox said. Mrs Barbara Jones, former Student Services Manager, describes him simply as ‘a legend.’

To honour his work into the future the Law School is establishing the Professor Lawrie McCredie Student Support Program. The Program will co-ordinate and provide services for students such as language and learning support, career advice, course and other forms of counselling, mentoring, leadership programs, pastoral care and related programs.

An initiative of the Dean, Professor Arie Freiberg, the program will introduce new services and consolidate existing activites. “Over the last few years, the Law School Foundation has provided funds for some of these programs, but needs are great and resources limited, particularly at a time when Federal Government support for the University is declining,” Professor Freiberg said.  The program will support all students to be, and achieve, their very best.
