Castan Centre Writing for Human Rights Essay Competition

2009 Writing for Human Rights Competition

The Castan Centre is delighted to announce the support of the Victorian Law Foundation for the 2009 and 2010 Writing for Human Rights Essay Competition.

The 2009 Topic is:

We’re Not Morons: Governments Should Stop Regulating Young People’s Lives

The topic will also be debated by experts in their field at the annual Monash Law Week Great Debate on 13 May 2009, where the essay competition winners will be presented with their prizes.

Prizes and Judging

Individual Prizes

  • 1st Prize: $1200
  • 2nd Prize: $800
  • 3rd Prize: $400

Certificates of Commendation will also be awarded to a small number of students who contribute outstanding submissions.

Schools Prize

Castan Centre for Human Rights Law School of Excellence: $2000

The winning school will be determined based on number and quality of submissions received.

Important Dates

  • 9 February 2009: Schools Information Packs sent to all schools in Victoria.
  • 20 March 2009: Competition Closes
  • 10 April 2009: Winners announced.
  • 13 May 2009: Winners presented with their awards at Law Week Great Debate (venue TBA)

Essay Guidelines

Students must meet all of the following guidelines:

  • Essays must be written by a Year 11 or 12 Victorian school student
  • Essays must be between 750 and 1000 words
  • Essays must be typed with a font no less than 10 point
  • Essays must be double spaced
  • Essays must be an original work of the submitting student
  • Only one eassay may be submitted per student
  • Essays should be correctly referenced if using or citing sources such as books, journals, newspapers and websites
  • Applications must include the name of a nominating teacher
