Karli Denier PDLP graduate 2001Legal Officer, FSA (UK)
After completing the PDLP, Karli Denier was immediately employed as a Legal Officer by the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC), which enforces and regulates company and financial services laws to protect consumers, investors and creditors.
This was a stepping stone to her present position as a Legal Officer with the Financial Services Authority (FSA) in London, UK.
Karli graduated with a Bachelor of Legal Studies from La Trobe University in 1998 and subsequently transferred to a Bachelor of Laws at Monash, which she completed in June 2001. She commenced the PDLP in July 2001 and continued her studies by transferring into a Master of Laws (Legal Practice) in July 2002. Karli was admitted to practise as a Barrister, Solicitor and Officer of the Supreme Court of Victoria in April 2002.
Karli's advice to students considering the PDLP
“The PDLP played a key role in my professional development through exposure to a wide range of practice areas and interaction with real clients with real problems.”
Karli believes that there are two common law school myths that circulate about doing a practical legal training, such as the PDLP, those being “that practical legal training graduates are not as marketable as Articled Clerks; and those that do not undertake an articles year are the sub-class of law student, effectively meaning that upon admission to practise they are a sub-class of legal professional.”
Karli wishes to debunk these myths. “In my group I had the chance to mix with the Dean of the Creative Arts School of Melbourne University, a BRW top 200 listed millionaire and a Singaporean practitioner with 15 years experience. Completing the PDLP provided me with an invaluable network of professionals and friends and was a major stepping-stone for my career. Another bonus is that successful completion of four more subjects gives me a Master of Laws (Advanced Legal Practice).”
