Graduate Certificate in Forensic Studies (Accounting)

This postgraduate qualification was developed for accounting practitioners by Monash Law School’s International Institute of Forensic Studies, in conjunction with the Australian Advocacy Institute and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA).

The course was developed some years ago and is now a well-established qualification in this professional area.

Course objectives

Participants in the Graduate Certificate in Forensic Studies (Accounting) will:

  • Expand their understanding of the forensic process
  • Develop and enhance the skills required to present confidently and professionally in the courtroom
  • Expand current techniques relating to analysis, preparation and report writing
  • Engage in networking opportunities with other practitioners
  • Gain a qualification which demonstrates a strong commitment to forensic practice.

Course Structure

This part-time course combine face-to-face sessions with online learning. The practical and interactive nature of the course encourages students to apply the knowledge and skills they have learned in the classroom to real-life problems. Students are given the opportunity to undertake trial practice and are able to review their performances and receive continuous feedback.

The course consists of the following four units:

LAW7281 The expert witness in the adversary system
LAW7282 Pre-trial preparation and analysis
LAW7283 Loss, causation and damages
LAW7284 The expert witness in the courtroom

Teaching Staff

The teaching staff for the Graduate Certificate in Forensic Studies is led by Professor The Hon. George Hampel AM QC. The team is made up of experienced senior practitioners and educators from the legal and accounting professions.

Professor The Hon. George Hampel AM QC

George Hampel is a Professor of Trial Practice and Advocacy at Monash University, the founding chairman of the Australian Advocacy Institute and the President of the International Institute of Forensic Studies at Monash. He spent many years as a barrister prior to his appointment as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria, a position he held from 1983 to 2000. Throughout his career, Professor Hampel has been chair of a number of legal education bodies. His advocacy and expert witness training experience extends over 30 years and across many international jurisdictions.

Course Duration

Part time combining online learning with 3 compulsory face to face sessions held in Melbourne.  The course program is designed to minimise interference with practice.

Course Intakes

Applications close 28th February each year.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold an accounting qualification and/or other relevant qualifications or professional experience.

This course is not available to international students.

Teaching Locations

The units are taught online and at the city-based Monash University Law Chambers located in the heart of Melbourne’s legal precinct at 472 Bourke Street, Melbourne.

Domestic student fee: AUD $10,795 for 2009
