Master of Laws (Advanced Legal Practice)

Students undertaking Monash University’s Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice, Skills and Ethics (PDLP) may be eligible to articulate into the Master of Laws (Advanced Legal Practice). PDLP students who achieve the required marks in relevant units can gain credit towards this degree - Eligibility and credit

Course structure

This course may be completed by undertaking eight coursework units or a combination of coursework and a minor research thesis:

  • Eight coursework units (at least five in advanced legal practice) or
  • 12,000-15,000 word thesis on advanced legal practice and six coursework units (at least three in advanced legal practice) or
  • 25,000-30,000 word thesis on advanced legal practice and four coursework units (at least one in advanced legal practice).

Applicants who have not completed their law degree in Australia must complete the unit Australian legal system as part of their degree.

Course duration

One year full-time or up to four years part-time study.

Course intakes

Semester one (commencing March): Applications close 31 January (domestic), 20 December (international)
Semester two (commencing July): Applications close 30 June (domestic), 31 May (international)

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a Bachelor of Laws with a minimum credit average or equivalent legal qualification.

English language requirements for international students

IELTS: 6.5 average with no individual band score under 6
TOEFL: 580 with no less than 5 for TWE; computer-based TOEFL 237 with an Essay Rating (ER) of 5

Teaching locations

The majority of units are taught at the city-based Monash University Law Chambers located in the heart of Melbourne’s legal precinct at 472 Bourke Street, Melbourne.

If you enrol in less than 48 credit points, your fees will reflect the reduction in your enrolment, and an increase in your enrolled credit points will reflect an increase in your overall fees.

Note: Monash University reserves the right to adjust annual tuition fees for future years of your course, to take into account increases in university and course delivery costs. However, the university undertakes that any adjustment factor will not exceed 6% per annum and will be applied on 1 January each year for that calendar year.
