Higher Degrees by Research

Doctor of Laws (LLD)

The LLD is a higher doctorate degree awarded to outstanding legal researchers. Prospective candidates are requested to contact the Associate Dean (Research).

The Law School conducts preliminary assessments and will advise prospective candidates if they are qualified to proceed to the following stages of application. For further information on higher doctoral degrees go to Higher Doctorate Programs or Research Graduate School Regulations.

Applicant requirements

LLD candidates must:

  • have qualified, not less than seven years previously, for a Monash degree;
  • be a current member of the teaching or research staff at Monash and have been so for not less than six consecutive years full-time or equivalent part-time; or
  • have qualified, not less than seven years previously, for a degree of another educational institution and have had a close research association Monash for not less than six years.

Work requirements

Work submitted for a higher doctorate degree:

  • must have been published not less than one year prior to submission;
  • must be the original work of the applicant;
  •  may include work conjointly authored provided
  • the conjoint work should be clearly indicated;
  • satisfactory evidence should be produced to show the applicant was responsible for a major portion of the work;
  • must not have been previously submitted for a degree in any educational institution, unless the relevant higher doctorate committee in any particular case otherwise determines.

Degree requirements

To qualify for the award of a higher doctorate degree, the work submitted for the degree must:

  • make an original, substantial and distinguished contribution to knowledge in the field concerned
  • give the applicant authoritative standing in that field and the right to general recognition of this standing by scholars in the field.
