Higher Degrees by Research

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The PhD can be undertaken in any area of research offered by the faculty and is suited to individuals who wish to:

  • pursue an academic career in law
  • pursue a major academic study project (such as a matter of law reform)
  • develop policy or theoretical perspectives in areas where they have recognised expertise.

A Monash Law PhD indicates that the holder has completed postgraduate training in research under appropriate academic supervision, and has submitted a thesis that examiners have declared to be a significant contribution to knowledge. The thesis will demonstrate the candidate's capacity to carry out independent research. For additional information on the PhD visit Doctoral Programs.

Structure

PhD students undertake a major research project and are required to complete a thesis of no more than 100,000 words in any area of research offered by the faculty.

Please refer to Chapter 1.3 of the Monash Research Gradudate School's Handbook for Doctoral and MPhil Degrees for further information on the structure of the PhD thesis.
